From February 2nd to 5th, 2025, we went on a 4-day, 3-night trip to Sapporo, Hokkaido. Today, I’d like to share our experience!
It all started when my child mentioned wanting to see the Sapporo Snow Festival.
I had never been to Hokkaido myself either, and since the Snow Festival is one of Japan’s largest winter events celebrating snow and ice, it was already on my bucket list.
Excited by the idea, I immediately started searching for hotels.

Preparations(事前準備)
Hotel Booking(ホテル予約)
Since we were traveling all the way to Hokkaido, I wanted us to stay for 3 nights. I searched on Jalan (a booking site) for budget-friendly options.
My criteria were:
- 1 room for 2 guests (1 adult, 1 elementary school student)
- Within walking distance from Sapporo Station
- Breakfast included
- One double bed
- On-site hot spring (onsen)
Based on these, I chose Super Hotel Sapporo Kita-5-jo Dori.
Because I booked more than six months in advance, I was able to use early-bird discounts and coupons. The total cost for 4 days and 3 nights was just 41,200 yen. Pretty cheap, right? (Note: Since this was for our stay in 2025, prices have likely gone up a bit by now.)
On-site
Inviting a Friend(お誘い)
When I mentioned our upcoming trip to a mom friend, she was so envious that I decided to invite her, even though I thought it might be a long shot.
I asked her during the summer, but she seemed really torn and took a while to decide. Just as I was about to give up around November, she unexpectedly said yes!
So, our travel group grew to 4 people: 2 adults and 2 elementary schoolers.
Since she booked her room in November, her rate was quite a bit higher than mine. However, she said it was still relatively reasonable and booked directly through the Super Hotel official website.
Flight Bookings(飛行機予約)
- Feb 2, 2025 (Sun) ANA 051: Tokyo (Haneda) 07:00 → Sapporo (Chitose) 08:30
- Feb 5, 2025 (Wed) ANA 076: Sapporo (Chitose) 18:30 → Tokyo (Haneda) 20:10
To make the absolute most of our time, we decided to catch an early morning flight out and a late evening flight back.
make the most of~ 〜を最大限に活かす/〜を心ゆくまで楽しむ
To make the absolute most of~ 「〜を文字通り100%・極限まで使い切る/最大限以上に活かす」 という強力な強調のニュアンスになります。
Activity Reservations(現地観光予約)
- Feb 2: Lake Shikotsu Ice Festival Bus Tour (booked via VELTRA)
- Feb 3: 2-Hour Parent & Child Ski Lesson (Mami Ski School at Mt. Moiwa Ski Resort) & Dinner at THE JEWELS (restaurant at the top of Mt. Moiwa)
- Feb 4: Glassblowing experience
I saw photos of the Lake Shikotsu Ice Festival and captivated by its magical atmosphere, so I booked it.
Except for my mom friend, all of us are complete beginners at skiing, but since we’re traveling to Hokkaido in winter, we really wanted to give it a try and signed up for a parent-child lesson.
The restaurant at the mountaintop is supposed to have an incredible view, so we decided to indulge a bit.
Glassblowing was originally something my friend and her child wanted to do, but my daughter showed interest in it too, so we all decided to try it out. It’ll be my very first time, too!

To reach Haneda Airport Terminal 2 by 6:00 AM, we caught a Keikyu Line train leaving Shinagawa Station around 5:30 AM.
We flew with ANA, but my friend’s family was on a JAL flight, so we agreed to meet up at New Chitose Airport.
My kid complained, asking “Why couldn’t we take the same plane?”, but off we went on our little two-person journey to Hokkaido!
on a JAL flight JAL便に乗って

From the plane window, we could see the Kameda Peninsula area in Hakodate.
The mountain in the foreground was Mt. Esan, an active volcano.

I also spotted an industrial zone and looked it up—it was the Tomakomai Coastal Industrial Area. The mountain range visible in the distance stretches along the south and west sides of Lake Shikotsu.

As we were landing, we could see Mt. Tarumae and Mt. Fuppushi.
The view from the plane window was breathtakingly beautiful. Hokkaido truly never disappoints!
New Chitose Airport was packed with amazing local food options—a true culinary paradise. We bought a few small items like onigiri (rice balls) for breakfast, but there were so many local specialties available. I highly recommend allocating plenty of time at the airport either on your way in or out!
When I closely re-read the brochure for the Lake Shikotsu Ice Ripple Festival, I noticed it mentioned needing shoe ice cleats (spikes).
I had completely overlooked this and hadn’t bought any!
In a panic, I looked around the airport to see if anywhere sold them, and thankfully found some at a standard drugstore. Not knowing which style was best, I bought the type that wraps around the instep of the foot.
Around that time, my friend and her child arrived, and we headed off to Sapporo together.
instep of the foot 足の甲
Airport to the Hotel(空港からホテルへ)
From New Chitose Airport Station to Sapporo Station, you can take the “Special Rapid Airport” train directly without any transfers.
Since it rarely snows in Tokyo, the kids were thrilled watching the snowy scenery pass by through the train windows.

Super Hotel Sapporo Kita-5-jo Dori is about a 15-minute walk from Sapporo Station, but since we had luggage, we took a taxi. Thanks to a mild winter, there was less snow than expected, and a lot of it had already melted.
An Unexpected Mishap at Check-In(チェックインでアクシデント)
We arrived safely at Super Hotel Sapporo Kita-5-jo Dori in just a few minutes, and I completed my check-in first.
However, when it was my friend’s turn, an issue popped up…
Even though our trip was for 4 days and 3 nights, due to a mistake, she had only booked 2 nights!
We were all panicking—What do we do about the remaining night?! Fortunately, the hotel told us they had one last room available for that night. We breathed a huge sigh of relief.
However, the price for that single extra night was a staggering 70,000 yen! We were completely shocked.
For comparison, my entire 4-day, 3-night stay was around 40,000 yen in total. What a massive difference!
Since the Snow Festival season is the busiest time of the year, hotel rates skyrocket for last-minute bookings. It likely would have been the same anywhere else, and given how crowded it was, there were hardly any vacant rooms left in the city anyway, so there wasn’t much choice… I felt so bad for her. She was quite down about the unexpected expense, but considering the situation, maybe we were lucky just to get a room at all.
I strongly recommend everyone double-check their hotel bookings carefully—especially during major events!
Stroll & Lunch(お散歩とランチ)
Shaking off the surprise, we took a stroll toward Sapporo Station to grab some lunch.
My daughter was wearing extra-plush, warm pants to beat the cold, but because of the mild winter, she got way too hot and started sweating. While the pants were warm, they trapped heat inside, making her quite uncomfortable.
She wanted to change, so we searched for a suitable pair at a department store connected to the station and found one at The North Face store.
Those North Face pants turned out to be fantastic—warm yet breathable—and proved to be an absolute lifesaver throughout the rest of the trip. As expected from The North Face, you really get what you pay for!
Since the dining areas inside the station were crowded with long queues everywhere, we decided to eat at a restaurant that looked relatively empty.

I love fried shrimp, so I ordered the fried seafood set meal, while my daughter had the raw fish (sashimi) set meal. The fried shrimp was crispy on the outside and plump on the inside—it was delicious!
Since this post has gotten quite long, I’ll save our evening trip to the Lake Shikotsu Ice Ripple Festival for the next post.
See you next time!
